Drink beetroot juice before exercise for a young brain


In a recent study, it has been found that drinking beetroot juice before working out can make the brain of older adults sharper and their brain works just like a brain of a younger adult.femaleadda app

Researchers from wake forest university, US conducted a research of 26 men and women aged 55 years and older who didn’t indulge in any 
workout, are a high blood pressure patient and had not more than two medications for high blood pressure. Then participants were asked to drink beetroot juice supplement known as beet-it sports shot, three times a week for six weeks before going for a 50-minute walk on the treadmill.


Half of the participant drank beet- it with 560 mg of nitrate whereas the other half drank placebo beet it with a low amount of nitrate.

On exercising our brains somatomotor cortex, which helps in processing information from the muscle, resolves the cue coming from the body. As per researchers, exercise helps in the making the somatomotor cortex stronger. So, when you combine beetroot with exercise it transports, even more, oxygen to the brain and hence creates a perfect environment to strengthen somatomotor cortex.


As per the study, the participants has a similar level of nitrates somatomotor cortex Nitrite in the blood before drinking the juice, the beetroot juice group had much higher levels of nitrate and nitrite than the placebo group after exercise.

Beets are a rich source of nitrate and on consumption, they first get converted into nitrite and nitric oxide. The nitric Oxide triggers the blood flow and numerous studies have shown that it can improve exercise performance in people of all ages.


"Nitric oxide is a really powerful molecule. It goes to the areas of the body which are hypoxic or needing oxygen, and the brain is a heavy feeder of oxygen in your body," said W Jack Rejeski of Wake Forest University. He also added that “We knew, going in, that a number of studies had shown that exercise has positive effects on the brain. But what we showed in this brief training study of hypertensive older adults was that, as compared to exercise alone, adding a beet root juice supplement to exercise resulted in brain "connectivity that closely resembles what you see in younger adults”.
